Music Hi-Lites’ Sound Spectacular, Wolverhampton, 27th July 2010
28 JulIt’s not difficult to find great talent in the Midlands, especially when it is presented to you by Music Hi-Lites in the form of a free live music event in the middle of the Mander Shopping Centre! From Mc’s to gospel singers, The Sound Spectacular provided entertainment for shoppers in Wolverhampton which soon livened up their afternoon.
Gospel singer Owen Hector began the show with some relaxing melodies including a beautiful rendition of Smile which got passers by stopping in their tracks to listen.
Following Owen came a more urban sound by Screama and Metamore with some fast paced MC-ing of their own tracks including Part Of Growing Up.
Another collaboration was soon churned out as Owen met with Sabrina for some more soulful songs which rang through the shopping centre (a venue which provided great acoustics).
The perfect ending to the showcase came with brilliant feel-good performances by Dreemz.
Dreemz were popular contestants on BBC1’s Last Choir Standing, making it to the quarter finals of the show. And boy did they liven up the city yesterday by belting out songs including Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and their own version of pop songs including a short version of Michael Jackson’s You Are Not Alone as well as Take That’s Never Forget.
As far as a typical Tuesday afternoon goes; this was definitely one to remember. The city of Wolverhampton embraced the day’s alternative shopping experience as they gathered around the performance area as well as looking over from the floor above. Many didn’t hesitate to take pictures and sing, even dance, along to the catchy numbers.
Music Hi-Lites will continue to bring you more local talent from the Midlands with further events in the near future and within our ever-growing salon network where you can hear and download music and pick up our free magazine!

A R Rahman, 23rd July, LG Arena
26 JulUnless you’ve been living in a soundproof box, you’re probably familiar with the 2008 hit movie Slumdog Millionaire. Directed by Danny Boyle, the film was awarded 8 Oscars including best picture, cinematography and best song – “Jai Ho” – composed by A R Rahman.
The recognition of this artist has soared around the globe, though many of South Asian origin will no doubt have heard his musical influence over the past two decades. From composing jingles for adverts to singing the songs of big blockbuster Bollywood movies, 44 year old Rahman has provided the soundtrack to many aspects of his fans lives.
He has now embarked on The Journey Home World Tour which also made a stop right here in the heart of the country at Birmingham’s LG Arena. The show is more than just a collection of songs performanced by various artists; it is a visual delight full of colour, glitz, glamour and a glorious tribute to all aspects of Indian culture.
Rahman gave the audience remarkable renditions of a selection of Bollywood music as well as treating us to snippets of Michael Jackson and ending with the ultimate Jai Ho and a standing ovation to Vande Mataram. It helps to be familiar with some of the hits of his past, but anyone lucky enough to experience this tour will be amazed at the effort put into the displays as well as the immeasurable talent by additional singers, dancers and musicians.
The Undercut…
21 JulAs far as out-there hairstyles go, this latest trend has to top the list for the year so far. The Undercut is formed by shaving the hair halfway up from the bottom of the head with the remaining hair on top hanging long and loose or short, high and punky. It has been described as the hottest look of the summer; well it’ll definitely allow some summer breeze to the back of your neck. Would you go for it?
This once outrageously punk-rock style has now been steadily entering the mainstream over the past year with demand for this look soaring in salons nationwide and it has been sported by celebs a plenty including Sarah Harding, Rihanna, Ellie Goulding, Mel B, Amelle from the Sugababes and probably more to come.
So if you’re after a new do with a bit of a rebellious edge, the undercut is bang on trend… of course you could always pull back your existing hair tightly smoothing it in from the sides and raise the top half into a textured quiff – plenty of hairspray later and voila! The easy way to achieve an alternative version of the look without a razor in sight (for those of us who are not so brave. Or job searching).
JLS, Warwick Castle, July 15th 2010
16 JulJack The Lad Swing – aka JLS – treated the Midlands to an open air concert at Warwick Castle to kickstart a list of summer tours. The crowd was made up of over 15,000 screaming fans who stood tirelessly in the pouring rain for the band. Supported by The Score, RD and Diana Vickers, the boys performed songs from their first album plus all their hits including their current number 1, The Club Is Alive.
Involuntary soundtracks…
12 JulWe all have a song stuck in our heads involuntarily at some point during the day, whether that be an annoyingly catchy pop song or R’n’B beat, or even one of those dreadful tv themes!
We at Music Hi-Lites would like to know what music you love and what music you love to hate! Are you a rock/metal fan and have caught yourself humming to Westlife? Or maybe you’re not too keen on Gaga, but when that chorus kicks in…
Does it even matter? Are you open to music diversity or are you (enter genre here) ’til you die?

Live Sound with Style
5 JulMusic Hi-Lites will be holding yet another live music event on Tuesday 27th July at The Mander Centre in Wolverhampton. Here’s a glimpse of what a great day out it will turn out to be like.
MUSIC HI-LITES’ SOUND & STYLE SHOWCASE, APRIL 10TH, 2010
Amongst the hustle and bustle of one typical Saturday afternoon at the Mander Centre, came a medley of melodies that floated through the wandering crowds; Music Hi-Lites held its first ever live music and fashion event.
The show kicked off with singer-songwriter Rhys Morris brilliantly performing his own songs complete with guitar. This University of Wolverhampton student has been playing and singing for 6 years and his ever growing catalogue of songs can be found on Myspace. Even more great music followed from the likes of Adam Dacey, who treated the crowds to some folk-inspired songs.
Owen E. Hector, a gospel singer, has a
passion for soul filled sound and proved the acoustics of the Mander Centre were definitely up to the standards we could have hoped for.Throughout the event, we also showcased a selection of New Look’s summer collection, modelled by stunning local models; Michelle Grice and Omie Pickerill.
A truly breathtaking performance from R’n’B singer Screama was
definitely the icing on the cake for the afternoon as he pumped up the gathering audience with upbeat tracks accompanied with a couple of friends.
